I am a homeowner. I realize the frustrations, the joys, the pride that home ownership can provide. I realize we all have grand visions of awesome decks, wide open kitchens, and jacuzzi tub bathrooms. In the six years I have owned my home, I have had absolutely wonderful experiences with contractors and I have had not so many wonderful experiences.

Because our home is such a personal issue to all of us, we are often hesitant, untrusting, impatient, unappreciative, and sometimes totally irrational with contractors we hire.

The reality is that the majority of contractors, are honest and reliable people. They started a business to obviously make money, but also to provide a needed service. They have family, friends, bills to pay also. My closest friends and half of my family are in that line of business. Trust me for every horror story you have, thay have a story that will include customers who have withheld payment, changed the contract agreement, changing the contract timeline not to mention being verbally and physically attacked.

So, what do we do as homeowners? We should approach the subject, intelligently, reasonably, and well informed. We set realistic expectations, we do some homework and we do our research. If you don't get a good feeling about one particular contractor, move on, there are plenty of good ones out there. Make sure you ALWAYS, ALWAYS:

          *** Check the Better Business Bureau
          *** Verify Insurance
          *** Verify Licenses
          *** READ the Contract
